PSHE/RSHE

At Nyland, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE Programme, a comprehensive and progressive scheme of learning that supports children’s personal, social, emotional and health development. Jigsaw brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development in a carefully structured way.

We recognise that children’s emotional wellbeing and their ability to build positive relationships are fundamental to their learning, development and happiness. Our PSHE curriculum therefore places a strong emphasis on emotional intelligence (EQ), helping children to recognise, understand and manage their emotions, develop empathy and communicate effectively with others. Through our Emotional Quotient (EQ) curriculum, pupils develop the self-awareness, resilience and interpersonal skills they need to navigate life confidently and positively.

We also recognise the importance of relational education. Children learn how to form and maintain healthy, respectful relationships, understand boundaries, resolve conflict and appreciate the feelings and perspectives of others. We believe that positive relationships provide the foundations for children to feel safe, valued, listened to and supported, both in school and beyond.

Through engaging lessons, discussion, reflection and a whole-school approach, we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and values they need to thrive as confident, healthy, compassionate and responsible members of society. Creating a safe and nurturing environment is central to this work, ensuring every child knows who they can turn to and feels confident to speak about their worries, feelings and experiences.

The programme also supports us in meeting all statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) in an age-appropriate, inclusive and sensitive manner. Our approach enables children to develop the knowledge and confidence to make safe, healthy and responsible choices, while understanding the importance of respect, consent, personal boundaries and positive relationships.
